How to Take Care of Dry Skin

As summer comes to a close and we transition into the vibrant fall season, you may see slight changes in your skin. With the colder months in the air, our skin tends to run a bit drier. 'Tis the season for pumpkin spice lattes, and upgrading your skincare regime to hydrate and replenish. Today, we're going to breakdown some of our tried and true private label skincare ingredients to nourish even the driest skin types!

Understanding Your Skin Type

Knowing if you have a dry skin type is helpful so you can properly help your skin. Rainshadow Lab's resident esthetician explains that dry skin types (also called Alipidic Skin) typically have small follicles, and the sebum in the skin is minimal. "If you can barely see the follicle or they are small, this typically indicates a dry skin type," says licensed esthetician Antonina. The natural sebum in our skin helps protect us from environmental stressors and aging. Hence, dry skin needs extra nourishment because it lacks this protection. Keeping our skin's barrier function properly working and using occlusive products to lock in moisture is imperative to care for dry skin.

Sometimes dry skin can tend to look dull and feel uncomfortably tight. There are skin tips and skin care products that can help to keep the skin balanced and glowing.

Cleansing for Dry Skin

When you are taking care of dry skin, it's imperative to use a gentle cleanser that won't leave the skin feeling tight and stripped of its natural oils. Consider using an oil-based or milky cleanser. Using cold water to rinse your face will further keep the skin from drying out. Turning up the temperature to high can strip the skin of its natural sebum, causing it to feel dry. Steer clear of harsh makeup wipes that cause unnecessary dehydration, irritation, and tug the skin. Instead, opt for removing makeup with an oil cleansing method.

Exfoliating for Dry Skin

Exfoliation is an essential step to remove dead skin cells so our moisturizers and oils can seep into the skin more easily. Our skin can tend to look dull thanks to the buildup of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Proper exfoliation will help address this. Using a hydrating lactic or enzymatic exfoliant will assist in removing buildup for better product penetration and luminous skin.

Evening Regimes

As we go off to sleep, our skin cells use this time to pause from constant environmental stressors and work to repair and rejuvenate. So applying moisturizers, nourishing oils, and concentrated serums in your evening regime will deeply replenish the skin. Facial oils are thicker and more occlusive, designed to protect the surface and trap water under the cream. So using a heavier moisturizer, then sealing it in with a facial oil is recommended for dry skin types to prevent transepidermal water loss.

Ingredients for Dry Skin

Whether you are looking to formulate a private label skincare product or purchase a sample for your regime, there are particular ingredients to look for that can hydrate the skin on a cellular level. Consider using plant-based skincare rather than beauty products formulated with synthetics and drying alcohols. Here are a few of our favorite natural hydrating substances:

  • Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil is a non-comedogenic facial oil that works to soothe and help drier skin feel hydrated and glowing.

  • Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is a well-rounded skincare ingredient that is great on all skin types, including aging and dry skin. It's known to increase hydration in the skin, which can keep your skin looking fresh, full, and bouncy. Not to mention, it's non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and won t just sit on the surface.

  • Panthenol (Vitamin B5)

Panthenol will maximize your skin's hydration and act as a shield barrier from irritants and dryness.

Rehydrate

Keeping a moisturizing SPF or facial mist to reapply through the day will keep the skin refreshed. Make sure to use a facial mist or toner without drying agents and more hydrating substances. Rainshadow Lab's resident esthetician recommends our private label Anti-Aging Clear Skin Toner for those looking to introduce a hydrating spritz throughout the day.

Treatments and Face Masks

Face masks work by delivering potent actives to the skin and may be used weekly. Dry skin types will want to pause from using clay and charcoal masks and opt for ingredients that increase hydration. If you are using a nourishing face mask, feel free to sleep with it on once a week to increase hydration.

Being mindful and drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help prevent dehydrated skin and improve your overall complexion. Consider adding a humidifier or diffuser in your room during the drier months to increase moisture in the air. Lastly, but not least, visiting the spa and having monthly or quarterly treatments can help to keep your skin youthful and refer you to the right products.
