The Double Cleanse Method (and why you should add it to your skincare ritual now!)

Daily, our skin faces environmental stressors, pollution, and many other factors that may cause breakouts and congested complexions. Gone are the days of rinsing your face with a generic cleanser and removing your makeup with chemical-filled makeup wipes that tug the skin and cause irritation. "Deeply cleansing the skin is essential to our skincare routine and a one-step water-based cleanser won't cut it," says licensed esthetician, Antonina.

Double cleansing is a method of cleansing your face twice: first, with an oil-based cleanser and again with a water-based cleanser. It can help remove stubborn, pore-clogging, and acne-causing impurities that can remain on the skin even after washing your face once. The first cleanse works to break down any makeup, remove dirt and excess oils from the day. The second cleanser works as a treatment based cleanser to address your skin concerns and skin type. Try out our private label Active Charcoal Purifying Cleanser for blemish-prone skin types or our #NOFILTER Active Enzyme Wash for a brightening enzymatic exfoliation. Double cleansing also prevents over-washing the skin and drying it out. If we strip our skin of its natural oils, our body may produce more oil, and that can lead to breakouts and irritation.

How do I double cleanse my skin?

Step One:

Warm 1-2 pumps of an oil or a pea-sized amount of a cleansing souffle in your dry hands by rubbing your palms together for a few minutes (we love our Cleansing Souffle for this!).

Step Two:

Once the oil cleanser/souffle has melted, gently work it into your skin (makeup and all) for one minute. Start massaging the product from the neck, slowly working your way upward in circular motions. Facial massage helps wake up the skin's circulatory system and improves blood flow for a glowing complexion.

Step Three:

Next up, it's time for our second cleanse. You can think of this cleanse as a treatment based cleanse. Choose a second cleanser fit for your skin type and condition. If you are struggling with pesky breakouts, you might want to reach for a cleanser that contains Willow Bark Extract and Tea Tree Oil. Maybe your skin is feeling a little dull? Consider adding a Vitamin C cleanser as your second cleanse. Lastly, if your skin is needing some extra exfoliation, an enzyme or glycolic cleanser may be fit for you!

Step Four:

Take a clean washcloth and soak in warm water for a bit. Ring it out and lay it over the entire face for 20-30 seconds. The warm washcloth will lift off the oil cleanser/souffle along with the makeup, dirt, and excess oil. Gently use that same cloth to wipe away any excess product.

Step Five:

Now it's time to tone the skin. We recommend using a nourishing toner rather than the astringent toners that tend to dry out the skin. Cleansing the skin can throw off your skin's pH balance, so using a toner will help rebalance everything. Look for ingredients like organic aloe, witch hazel, and hyaluronic acid when shopping for your next toner. Our private label, Anti-Aging Clear Skin Toner is a unique formula that is great for this.

Step Six:

Post cleanse and tone is prime time for your skin to receive active and nourishing ingredients. Apply your favorite serums, moisturizers, and facial oils starting from the neck and working your way up to the face. Serums contain potent topical antioxidants, vitamins, and hydrating substances that act as targeted treatments for various skin conditions.

After applying your serums, it's time to use a moisturizer right for your skin. Using a moisturizer with ingredients like panthenol, peptides, and hyaluronic acid will be a game-changer for hydrating your skin (try our private label Peptide Complex Moisturizer).

Now it's time to lock in all the topical vitamins and skin-loving ingredients with a facial oil. If you are prone to congestion and clogged pores, consider using non-comedogenic oils like hemp seed oil, grapeseed oil, and jojoba oil. Many facial oils also contain natural anti-inflammatory benefits, vitamins A, C, E, and omega fatty acids.

Step Seven:

Repeat every day. Consistency is vital to reap the benefits of proper skincare. Carve space each day in the morning and evening to thoroughly perform your skincare regime. Light a candle or diffuse essential oils, set positive affirmations, do your skincare routine, and take on the day with a beautiful complexion! If you re an esthetician or spa owner, always advise your clients to do proper home care and encourage them to receive facials every 6-8 weeks or quarterly.
